NaPoWriMo – Poem / Poetry – “Facing The Music”

Hello my fun loving friends! (Boy, am I about to burst your bubble…”Hush Penfold! Don’t give the game away!” “Cripes, sorry chief!”)

So it is Day 9 of NaPoWriMo (yeah we know David – National Poetry Writing Month, you’ve told us like a million times already. No! Only nine, so get off your high horse! I do enjoy these fun little fantasy debates we have) and you can find the prompt by clicking on the link belowski:-

NaPoWriMo – Day 9

Today’s prompt involves listening to a musical playlist (on your Ipod, MP3 player, local radio station, local bus stop flyer, elevator muzak, etc) and using five random songs to construct your own poetic Frankenstein musical monsterpiece.

To be fair, the one I have written this time round is pretty dark, so as the say in Games of Thrones – brace yourselves, there’s a poetic storm coming!

Also, feel free to comment on the bands I constructed this sucker with or tell me about your own favourite bands too because to be frank, I could always do with listening to more music under the hands of your expert tutelage.

I’m a fan of indie bands and hard rock more than anything. Oh and electro too! So go crazy and let me know. Thanks for reading. Ciao for now!

Dark Chocolate by John Loo

“Facing The Music” by David Ellis

You know my name
The way it is displayed
Blood on parched lips
Scars that seldom heal
Heartache for weeks
Drinking the homeland dry
The pain still desecrates

This is our perfect crime
Committed with practiced ease
Wiping our sleeves
On mediocrity
Ashes to ashes
Reputations to dust

Here we go again
The drama continues
Jumping from one thing
To the next
Without a care in the world

Nothing to hold us back
Feeling free but still caged
Unable to stop, to get off
From this inevitable slump

Who likes to party?
Let’s do it all night
The rivers running rampantly red
A lack of restraint

Killing ourselves
One day at a time
Getting away with murder
We’re our own victims
If we let the darkness in
There are no fresh starts
Or hopeful new beginnings

Redemption could be
Just around the corner yet
We feast on indulgence
Robbing life of romance
Playing a game we cannot win
Don’t let excess consume everything

With special thanks to the following artists whose song titles were used in this piece:-

Chris Cornell (You Know My Name – Casino Royale)
Faith No More (Ashes To Ashes)
Pixie Lott (Here We Go Again)
Kevin MacLeod (Who Likes To Party)
The Von Bondies (This Is Our Perfect Crime)

  1. Hey thanks for including a link to my post! I will be checking out some of the others you’ve linked to there since stories related to music are a favourite topic of mine. I’m not familiar with any of the songs you used to create your own lyrics, but you appear to have done a mighty good job of the task at hand!

    • You’re very welcome and thank you for taking the time to read my poem, I appreciate it very much. It was one of my favourite prompts, since music and poetry go hand in hand after all 🙂
